We Did It!

Monday, April 9th, 2012
We flower bombed the heck out of kathy’s room after her surgery. We loaded her with gift cards for her favorite places, raising over $1,600.00.
We went to the Orange County flower market and saved a ton of money on flowers and vases so we will be sending her flowers throughout her chemo for the next few months too, along with notes of encouragement from you all. Thank you so much to all her friends and strangers moved by this lame ass cancer, and the sweetness of Kathy. We will keep the donation window open until April 15 for those of you who want to send her a note as well as a few fresh flowers during the months of chemo. We were all moved by the many donations and can’t thank you enough for caring about our friend. Special thanks to the Lewis’ and JB for helping me pull this off.

STRANGE LIGHT HITS VANCOUVER

Wednesday, February 8th, 2012

‘Strange Light,’ is Brown’s longest and most ambitious work to date. Simultaneously a cosmic love story and an auto-biographical gut-search, the poem culls themes present throughout his poetry into a single work, where they are clarified in the light of a new found personal vulnerability. “When you die, it is poetry that leaves the body,” Brown writes — so it follows that life is all of the poetry vibrating within the body. The poem tells the story of one such body: “a man with strange light and tiny blisses…”

ITS COMING TO VANCOUVER NEXT WEEK. PLEASE COME. SHOWS LISTED UNDER SHOWS. Email me if youre coming and we will get a beer. writebloody@gmail.com

snazzy short poetry film from derrick and holechek film makers wins big

Monday, November 7th, 2011

When the Holechek brothers came to me and said we would like to turn your finger two dots then me poem into a short film, no new text, just the poem as is, I was skeptical. Various well meaning parties for the last decade had started on the project via green screen and it was never completed, usually due to the high costs of render time and graphic personnel. The H brothers decided to shoot it all live and add a few touches here and there to make it more like real empire strikes back special effects rather than the jar jar fake lazer feel.
I had no idea what a film festival liked or leaned towards. That world is so grossly foreign to me. The fellas went on a submission spree for late 2011 and 2012 and so far the results have been tasty. Kudos to you fellas for giving a rip and making poetry reach out to new places. It is a bad ass art form that just needs more talented collaborations like this to make it’s short arms reach farther out into the world. The coolest thing was the sweep of the Milwaukee film festival by winning
Best film,
Audience favorite
and Best Directors.

If you write poetry, imagine it beyond the page, beyond the stage, and then bust your butt to make it happen. You can do it.

A FINGER, TWO DOTS THEN ME, a poetry film by Derrick Brown. Directed by the Holechek Brothers.

NEW PROJECT FROM DERRICK BROWN UNITES DANCE, MUSIC AND POETRY

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

Great news from Long Beach folks!

The speak easy thrill fest was the best show I have ever put on. Thank you for dancing to lasers and listening to the buttloads of poetry talent.

I have been commissioned to do the coolest thing I have ever done.
I have been asked to write a new 40 minute long poem for the prestigious Noord Danse Collective to Dance to
and they also asked that I use some of the money to hire musicians of my liking to compose new music for it to
for Juliard choreographer Stephen Shropshire to work with.

We just turned in our rough draft and I have been trying out some pieces here and there. I will be trying out a few of these pieces from my first epic poem attempt July 31
with some music at the Portland Poetry Slam.

It is called Journey of Impossible Lovers. Written for the experience called INSTRUMENTAL

Once these 2011 and 2012 european dates have been completed
we will be reaching out to all of you to see if you can recommend any opera houses or large performance art theaters for us to bring it to.
Here is a sample of what they did last year.

Please come if you are anywhere near holland or germany. I will also be touring the UK and Germany for the first time in many years solo, trying out this new work and some translated pieces. I can’t wait.

NEW LIFE

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

San Francisco was such a sweet show. I really feel a change happening in America in regards to people feeling empowered to put on their unique and fun art shows, including poetry, especially poetry. Robbie Q is working on a book about sparking your community. Mindy Nettifee is working on one about the craft of writing and I am working on a book about touring as an author, and a book about being a failed mime (by Dick Richards)

Also, I could really really use your help in two ways. I could use a comment posted for this finger two dots video the incredible holechek brothers made.

Also, we found out the amazon reviews affect your rankings in a good way. It would take about thirty seconds and it would help me out so much. If you like any of my poems or books, would you be down to help me by writing a little sentence or two
