The Night Reports

nightreports_1nightreports_2

This haunted sports musical is performed by Derrick Brown, Beau Jennings and Hamish along with special guests. It is a five person musical event of slow, melodic POWER as well as some riotous bar gems that survive around the plot of a former baseball star that is becoming worse on the field the more he falls for a woman. The worse he plays, the more she falls out of love with him.

Spring Hill Spider Party / GLOCKUNDSPIEL

l_18a6d808c19ff798b94212440f730353

The Spring Hill Spider party is a dance band from Spring Hill TN. We used to be called Glockundspiel when we lived in Long Beach. Glockundspiel first played at the prospector with Derrick Brown and Tatiana Simonian. We used to have German accents that would fade with every drink. In TN our band used to include Phil Murrell, Amanda Valentine and Derrick Brown. We then switched it up after those two quit to include J. Keckley, Travis Tohill, Jonathon Morrell, Derrick Brown and sometimes Bobby Holland or Ben Pearson. It is true that we have had an incredibly tumultuous time with the band Kings of Leon, mostly due to their jealousy of our money and a few misunderstandings.
Click HERE to read why their fans almost rioted during one of our Nashville Concerts. Dr. Carlos Mandible (DCB dance alter super ego) had to send a letter to the paper explaining how their fans might have duped themselves. You can smell the vitriol in the blogs and responses below the humorous article. It was a free show.

All Black Cinema was alive from 2003-2007. It was Jason Donnell and Derrick Brown. After the demise of The John Wilkes Kissing Booth, the hunger for a stress free, no lockout kind of situation was longed for. Derrick and Jason wanted to try and make some songs that were even sissier than anything attempted before. It started with the songs, I Can not Write The Love Songs and British Seas. It felt good. We booked a tour and had a few people back out at the last minute, including my only other creative musical partner, the one who wrote the jams with me, Jason. I hate canceling shows. I still tried to do the tour. It was not good. Jory, former drummer from JWKB and I had fun doing a few dates but it was pretty embarrassing. We tried to hire buddies to play Jason’s parts and it wasn’t right. I wish I would’ve swallowed my pride and canceled those shows. Jason and I decided to not tour or do shows at all and just make songs for fun over the internet,(which limits your fanbase but is still fun) so we released It’s like Stars Hitting Ice. The cover is a drawing of myself and Jason (former BMX pro). I’m shooting him out of the sky like in a duck hunt video. Cole Nuckols did a great cover. I did all the mixing and vocals in Nashville. We had no drummer so Dave Browning (producer) did all these drums digitally with his forefinger as well as strings. He offered so much encouragement, I really wanted to tour for it. Amazing job with the digits if you get to take a listen. We never toured. We were so surprised that the album was finally made by only emailing melodies back and forth. It made us excited to try new things and we began a new album right away. Then Jason called me and said he had decided to move forward with his business and put music away (for good?). I was bummed but I still loved the guy. We started about 6 unfinished songs that I will release here for a free album called I Hate You Jason, a phrase I snuck in on the live recording of The Devil Is Driving Me From hell To Long Beach.

John Wilkes Kissing Booth

johnwilkskissingboothmzi.hzgnjxcg.170x170-75

In 1998, Jeff Numainville and I wanted to start a band that sounded like the Blow Monkeys. My old high school buddy Tony Joe Neal was a big fan of the same music as I, including bands like the Trash Can Sinatras and he was a very welcome addition on guitar. We snatched up my bowling buddy, drummer, Jason Boesel (now plays with Rilo Kiley and Conor Oberst) and an amazing bassist and designer named Paul Smith. Paul and Tony Joe were listening to bands like At The Drive In and June of 44 at the time and I felt a new raw energy that really appealed to me as much as the sweeter rock. We tried to do both sounds on our first ep. Fans were torn. I was torn. For our full length, we had to choose one style over the other. We recorded for 3 days straight (as in sleeping bags under the microphones). We went with a little more rocking sauce, even though I had a soft voice. We had to hurry along due to money issues so it was one take on the vocals for our full length, A Threat In The Broadcast. We were a great live band. We would do crazy fun things at our live shows and our live show had events like: fire extinguishers, sliding around on knee pads, exploding confetti cannons, we made it snow, we had audience slow dancing contests and a real kissing booth that I manned. (Yes, I had to kiss dudes.) Anything to get our name out there. When Boesel left, we found a brilliant musician and drummer named David Beeman who could play anything at any tempo. He was young and wild and would soon vanish on us, but not before we achieved much. His new band is sooo good. (Oldlights.net) We once set up outside a show that we tried to get booked for, but were rejected. It was Pedro The Lion and Starflyer 59 at the Glass House. We plugged in across the street and as the doors opened after the show, we turned it up and got through three raucous songs, surrounded by hundreds of cheering people and about 6 really angry cops. Velvet Blue music owner witnessed this and said these dudes seem crazy. We got signed to velvet blue music, toured the US a ton and never saw a dime from the record company. We had a huge sweet fanbase that made us want to keep playing, so we kept on, after our drummer David vanished, we found Jory Walker, a former Amarillo street tough and buff rad guy drummer. We tried to stay alive with him and the powerful melodies of Jason Donnell for a few years, but it wasn’t quite the same. We should’ve changed the name, but we wanted to play the old songs. We had talent, but no connections to make it to the next level. Soon after the break up of the band, Jory was shot by gang members 5 times, lived and moved back to Texas. For some reason we never made it big. I am not sure why. No one plays guitar better than Tony Joe Neal and he really pushed us to suss out the power. It is no secret that our band had tension among ourselves. Jason Bosell left our band to audition for some lady band named Rilo Kiley, soon Paul followed to chase the married life. Jason Donnell now sells cars and is married. Jory lives in Texas, engaged and makes things. Jeff Numainville is a teacher in Fullerton and is married. Jason Bosell is famous and swinging his junk all over Hollywood. Tony Joe works in Dallas and lives with his pretty wife. Derrick still tours, is single and is trying other poetry and publishing stuff while living on his boat in Long Beach. My favorite song: Motorcade.

Here was a fan favorite called Go Girl Kill Switch

Click HERE to see them perform one of their last songs they ever made called Black Market Malaysia. I sure had a hard time hearing that last night we performed, (off key to the max) but for me it was more about dishing out all the pent up energy for our last performance more than playing perfect notes, or hitting them. Edited by Matt Combs

LYRICS TO BLACK MARKET MALAYSIA
In a slow mo cashmere night
I heard a Malay Chinese opera sing your name
Underneath Petronas Towers
I waited over 13 hours
You never came
I read about the abduction rates and now my hearts ablaze
CHORUS-YOU ARE THE ONLY WAY BACK HOME
AND IF I HAVE TO DEAR, ILL DRAG OUR BODIES BACK
SOME MEN CAN NOT STILL-SILVER COUNTER ATTACK
I DO NOT TRUST THE COPS-
TRAVEL THE ROOFTOPS-
AS THE DAWN GROWS COLD
THEY WANT YOUR ORGANS SOLD
HOLD ON TIGHT THROUGH THIS DARK MALAYSIAN NIGHT
more words and then
BUSINESS, A KILLING FIELD
AND THE FIELDS ARE LUSH
I GOT SOME DEALS TO MAKE
I GOT SOME HOPES TO CRUSH, UH OH OH.

Richard Swift & Derrick Brown

Richard+Swiftgreenwall

Black Urchin, the sounds of the book Scandalabra, was the musical project between musician Richard Swift and author Derrick Brown. It was a whisky fest. Once again, Derrick drove down to a secret studio and met Richard for 3 days and invented tracks with Richard for Black Urchin. The goal was to treat a poetry album as if it was a film score, but to do it all quickly. Some golden gems came out of that experience. You must hear Richard’s music projects even if you despise poetry. If Randy Newman wasn’t a cynic, if Rufus Wainwright was more gay, had a bunch of kids and a wife and was made out of lazers, that’s Richard.

I made some recordings that have music and fun. I talk too much inbetween pieces.
All Distorion was made with my buddy Tim Schoepf in TN during a stormy evening.
I could only pay him in whisky. Tim is a piano whiz living and rocking in chicago.

DISASTER SNAKE

Joshua+KeckleyIMG_27102625_531661893965_82403500_32399082_6237815_n

Disaster Snake was a Nashville musical collaboration between Spring Hill Spider Party members to try some songs that were too real for the spider party experience. We were going for a Gorillaz-New Order style super pop, because the winter in Nashville is depressing because there is no snow. We started these and never finished them. Ugh. They turned out nice, but unfinished. I don’t know what happened. The members were Josh Keckley on music, Derrick on vocals and melodies and the blind and sweet Bobby Holland producing and playing other good gems. Send these to your record label friends and watch them say, “wait, aren’t these guys old?”
