FAQ’s for Write Bloody Press How do you get from manuscript to marketplace? Our promotions techniques are always evolving. We ask our authors to tour. All of them. We also do our part and push to get your book in all major bookstores as well as online distribution channels. We use 4 channels. Do you need an editor? Yes you do. Fresh eyes change everything. Designer? Your book cover needs to match the mood of the interior book block. Our catalog has a feel and that feel has been pretty successful. You are a constant partner in the design phase. How will you find a quality printer with competitive pricing? We’ve done that for you through years of research. Vanity presses like Lulu.com charge way too much. How will you get your book into retailers’ systems? We take care of that. You just hit the road and supply a spec sheet to us with pertinent info. We send that to you once we make progress. What if I want to move on from your press after a year? You can. We ask for at least one year to promote the author and we will sell the stock we have of your book if you go. You maintain rights. How can people buy your book once it’s been printed? Indie bookstores, major bookstores, online marketplaces. Marketing to these takes about 4 months. How do you know you’re not getting ripped off? Our staff has authors on board that believe that good literary work needs to get out into the world. We wouldn’t want to get ripped off either. We know where you’re coming from. You could figure out all of these steps yourself and pay various service providers a separate fee and make you wonder why you ever wrote a book in the first place—it will cost you a lot of money. From editing all to way to complete book fulfillment, Write Bloody is your one stop center. Our company was born from one author seeking ways to publish his work without all the gouging and hassles of the typical publishing world. After years of trial and error, Write Bloody takes all this experience and is ready to share it with you. Why do we go with glossy and not satin covers? We used to do matte or satin covers and if you’re an avid reader, you’ll notice cracks in the design after only a few uses. We learned this the hard way. Should I save money by having a friend edit or proofread my book? You could but only if you have to, unless your friend is an editor. Fresh eyes are worth all the money in the world. An editor will look at your work subjectively, tighten it up, correct errors, and make suggestions for improvement. You could hire one on your own but it could get pricey. Can I skip getting an ISBN? Yes but it is not recommended. If you ever try selling it anywhere, you definitely need one. Getting an International Standard Book Number (ISBN) is absolutely necessary in any publishing endeavor if you want your book to be available in resellers’ databases. Write Bloody can do this for you. We buy them in bulk. We will also provide a barcode, which goes on the back of the book. What is an LCCN? The purpose of a Library of Congress Card Number (LCCN) is to make sure libraries know how to properly categorize and shelve your book. Most Libraries use the category type which is issued at time of printing by Write Bloody. How do I get a copyright? Once it is printed and listed you are good to go. You could do a poor man’s copyright and just mail yourself the manuscript. For the most legitimate copyright Go to copyright.gov. The cost is 45.00. What is Print On Demand? It’s a fancy way of saying a short run of books. It is the way to go if you’re not sure how many will sell. Some vanity presses encourage you to buy a thousand books since it will lower costs. We think it is good to start out with low costs. We do give discounts at 500 and then 1000, but we don’t recommend new authors printing too many books. Just print some, see how they sell, then order some more. Who owns the Book? You do. Absolutely. I have been sent book samples from other companies. Are they all the same? Not at all. We look for a ton of things like against the grain binding, no lamination, crooked spine, missing pages, low contrast covers. We had to do a lot of searching to partner with an affordable and amazing printer that is fast and reliable.
