We died of pneumonia in furnished rooms where they found us three days
later when somebody complained about the smell we died against bridge
abutments and nobody knew if it was suicide and we probably didn’t know
ourselves except in the sense that it was always suicide

McCarthy, a poet based in Washington, became involved with the Seattle Spoken Word poetry community and was invited to be a main-stage performer at the Washington Poets Association Burning Word Festival in April 2006. As he battled against cancer, he prepared the manuscript Drunks and other poems of Recovery, published posthumously by Write Bloody Publishing in 2013.
